How long have you been in the PHCP-PVF industry?

TK: I have been in the industry for 8 years.

What drew you into the industry?

TK: My father is a union plasterer and my grandfather was a union operator so construction work sort of runs in the family. My father refused to let me do what he does, so he told me to either be a plumber or an electrician, and I chose plumbing.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working in the industry?

TK: In my opinion, the most rewarding aspect of working in the industry would be building something with my hands and watching a project from the beginning stages to the end. Seeing how things are built and knowing how things function is interesting to me.

What motivates you every day?

TK: Knowing that I have a job to do and problems to overcome motivates me everyday to do the best that I can. If I'm going to do something, I'm going to put my effort into it and do it right. Also, knowing that my wife is waiting at home for me motivates me to be safe every day and come home in one piece.

What is one thing you wish more people knew/understood about the PHCP-PVF industry?

TK: One thing I wish more people knew or understood is the magnitude of the industry. There really is no limit to what can be done from small residential work to large industrial work, power plants to professional sports stadiums. Mechanical workers touch most aspects of people's daily lives without people realizing it. The phrase “The plumber protects the health of the nation” comes to mind. Most common amenities would not be possible without the hard work of a person in our field, and I don't want that to be taken for granted.

What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?

TK: The proudest moment in my career so far would be completing my apprenticeship program with my fellow graduates. It was a long five years but it was worth it.

What is one thing most people don’t know about you?

TK: One thing most people don't know about me is that I'm a musician and I have been for a while. I play lead guitar and sing. I've been in bands for probably 15 years now. It is a hobby that is a lot of fun and I've even opened up for some professional bands over the years. Currently, I play at my church in the town where I grew up and enjoy serving people that way.

Why he was chosen as a Next Gen All Star Top 20 Under 40 winner:

“Tim just finished his five year apprenticeship program with UA Local 22. He had the highest GPA in his class and perfect attendance for the five year program. He also competed in the UA State Apprenticeship Competition and won, then moved on to UA District 1 Competition and won that — he moved on to compete in the International competition in August.

“Every person that works with or meets Tim brags about how thorough and hard-working he is. Tim is extremely talented and is only in his mid-20s. The reason I'm nominating Tim, however, is because he is one of the humblest, nicest and honest guys I know. He would help anyone, and you would never know Tim was as talented as he is by talking to him. He would tell you he is a decent worker but he could do better. He has a positive attitude and an open mind for learning and teaching others. I could go on and on about Tim, He truly loves this trade and pours his heart into it.” — Bryan Schiefer, UA Local 22
