How long have you been in the PHCP-PVF industry?
ZB: Since 2006 — the day I turned 16 was my first day of work.
What drew you into the industry?
ZB: I was adopted at 16 by a fifth-generation plumber. I just fell in love with it.
What is the most rewarding aspect of working in the industry?
ZB: The philosophical aspects of it — I tell my apprentices you have to master yourself. I came from a really terrible, troubled background. So being able to reflect and grow as an individual inside of the trade
What motivates you every day?
ZB: Definitely my kids — I have four: Isaac, 12, Eli, 10, Noah, 7, and Bella, 4. My oldest two go to work with me all the time — they’ve been working with me since before they can speak. They can even test backflows. It’s something I can pass down to my kids and something I can teach them about life.
What is one thing you wish more people knew/understood about the PHCP-PVF industry?
ZB: To make it a career, you should really have a strong philosophical view. I wish people would focus more on themselves instead of becoming jaded and making less people want to come into the trade.
What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?
ZB: I’m starting a training school right now. We’re looking to go live probably the first of the year.
What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
ZB: How much training apprentices matters to me. I’m a pretty leisurely guy outside of work, but at work, I’m a very diligent person.
